Biei—The Town of Hills
Mt. Tokachidake and Bieigawa River Block Dam (Blue Pond)
〜See the Blue Pond—a surreal sight unfolding before your eyes〜
The Blue Pond, located in Biei Hokkaido is a man-made pond that appeared because of water pooling after the Bieigawa River was dammed as part of a pyroclastic flow prevention project. It is a popular tourist attraction due to the surreal landscape it creates.
The bank and path were damaged by a typhoon in August 2016 and the pond temporarily lost its blue color, but after three weeks, the water returned to blue and the site was restored. These days, the pond mesmerizes many people just as it did in the past.
