Otaru Port Museum:Find the Origin of the Modern Japanese Port
〜Experience the history of ports〜
The north breakwater of Otaru Port was conceived, designed, and constructed by Professor Isami Hiroi in the latter half of the Meiji Period. It is the first true ocean breakwater in Japan and it was made by stacking sloping blocks.
In 2000, it was listed by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers as Selected Civil Engineering Heritage site, and in 2001, was listed as a Hokkaido Heritage historic structure. Even after 120 year have passed, it still protects the town of Otaru.
At the Port Museum located at the Otaru Port Office, touch the spirit of civil engineering born in the Meiji Period by experiencing the history of the north breakwater and Otaru Port buildings. Also, in July each year, group tours of Otaru Port are conducted aboard the port vessel Himawari. Come and see the history of Otaru Port for yourself.
