The Ueno Detention Basin

The Ueno Detention Basin is located in Iga City, Mie Prefecture, a city that has ties with the the Iga school of ninja training.
This detention basin stores part of the floodwaters during a major flood, ensuring its function in controlling water flow, and plays its part in flood control measures around Iga City.
This detention basin project prevents flooding in the city of Iga City without increasing the peak flow of the Kizu River and Yodo River, which are downstream from Iwakura Gorge.

• The Ueno Detention Basin scenery consists of the overflow levee and the countryside. Looking at the drainage gates and landlocks up close will give you a feeling of just how large these structures are.
• A board showing the depth of water inundation that caused damage during past floods is set up at the Kagiya-no-Tsuji Historical Park near the Kiko Detention Basin, so you can experience how deep the waters overflowed at that time.
• Also, the detention basins have reduced how much damage was caused by water inundation. There are now many factories and commercial facilities around the detention basin, and this has increased the number of households.
• The Central Management Center Resource Room of the Ueno Detention Basin is a facility where you can learn about detention basin planning and operational management. More than 10,000 people have visited to date.
