See and Learn about Niigata-Nishi Port from a Boat
〜A port tour for parents and children〜
Niigata Port (West Port), located at the mouth of the Shinano River, is designated as one of the five ports that opened Japan to the world, together with Hakodate, Yokohama, Kobe, and Nagasaki. On January 1, 2019, the port celebrated 150 years of existence.
We hold Parent-and-Child Port Tours for elementary and junior high school students and their parents on multiple days from late July to early August. During these events, visitors tour Niigata West Port onboard the port service vessel “Asahi,” and we open our hydraulic test station to the public. During the tour, our visitors learn about the role of ports, which are so closely connected to our daily lives, deepening their understanding of the importance of ports, and additionally encouraging them to develop an interest in and an attachment to their local port. The scenery of the port seen from the water, which our visitors are normally not able to see, and the hydraulic test station, provided with some of Japan’s finest wave-making equipment, are the highlights of this tour.
