Seta River Overflow Weir, Mizu-no-Megumikan Aqua Biwa

See the Facilities That Control the Waters of Lake Biwa and Yodo River!

〜Seta River Overflow Weir, Mizu-no-Megumikan Aqua Biwa〜

The Seta River overflow weir is a second-generation facility installed in 1961, replacing the original weir that was set up in 1905 in the Seta River. The facility was built to prevent flooding downstream in the Yodo River, the only river that flows out from Lake Biwa. Currently, the facility manages the water level of Lake Biwa for the purpose of flood protection around the lake, maintaining the lake water levels, reducing the flood flow of the Yodo River downstream of the overflow weir and maintaining the normal function of the flowing water, and supplying tap water and industrial water. Visitors can also see the overflow weir and the operations room, which is located inside the Lake Biwa River office.
“Mizu-no-Megumikan Aqua Biwa” is a center that introduces the history and roles played by the Seta River overflow weir, which manages the water level of Lake Biwa. The center uses models and touch panels to introduce visitors to the Lake Biwa Comprehensive Development Project and its results, the Amagase Dam Redevelopment Project (which is now entering its peak construction period), and non-structural measures taken in the region where Yasu River is
