Slaying the Orochi of the Heisei Period Welcome to Obara Dam
〜Study the history of coexistence of a rampageous river and our forebears in an ancient landscape where Japanese deities meet together 〜
Obara Dam is located in Unnan, Shimane. It is a multipurpose dam that straddles the upper reaches of the class-A Hiikawa River, which is the setting for the legend of Yamata no Orochi, the eight-headed and eight-tailed dragon.
In March each year, the crest gates are opened for an annual discharge test.
The waterfalls created by the discharge of the two crest gates are an astonishing fifty meters tall!
The discharge can be viewed up close from the space directly below the dam, which can be accessed via an elevator and a tunnel inside the dam.
