Protecting the Unexplored Area of Iya! “Erosion Control and Landslide Countermeasures” That Blend into Nature
〜Ensuring safety and peace of mind, and improving local appeal〜
The Iya area of Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture is known as one of Japan’s three most unexplored areas.
The scenery of the steep mountains and deep valleys, historic sites said to be linked to refugees of the Taira clan, and activities of people living in the mountains are attracting many tourists from both throughout Japan and abroad.
The area around Iya no Kazura Bridge, one of Japan's three most unique bridges, is especially a major tourist destination that attracts more than 300,000 visitors per year.
In the Iya area, there are erosion control and landslide prevention projects underway while taking care not to damage the landscape.
By protecting both villages, tourist facilities, access roads, etc. from sediment disasters through both projects, Iya has become increasingly appealing as a safe and secure sightseeing spot.
