I Came. I Saw. I Learned. Port of Sakata
〜Experience the scale of construction at ports〜
The Port of Sakata is located in the north of Yamagata Prefecture. It was established at the mouth of the Mogamigawa River, and it has long thrived as a port of call for the kitamaebune, which carried goods up and down the sea of Japan during the Edo period.
At present, it supports the lifestyles of Yamagata residents as the only commercial port in Yamagata.
All of the equipment at the port is large in scale. A concrete box, called a caisson, weighing more than 2,700 tons was used for the wharf construction works to enable ships to moor safely. Tetrapods weighing 50 tons were used for the breakwater construction.
The Sakata Port Office conducts tours for people to experience and learn about port construction.
As part of the tours, participants can board the official port vessel, Mizuho, and experience the Port of Sakata from the sea. (Conducted from around April to October)
The content of the tour depends on the time required and the number of participants. If you are interested or curious about the port, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
